Bilingual Services

When a student enrolls who speaks a language other than English at home, district staff administer a language screener to assess English proficiency. This helps determine eligibility for Bilingual Program Services. When appropriate, the assessment may include both English and the student’s home language.

Program Overview

The district’s Bilingual Education Program follows a Transitional Bilingual Model. The goal is to support English Learners (also referred to as Emergent Bilingual students) in developing English proficiency while ensuring full access to grade-level learning.

Students receive instruction designed to support both language development and academic achievement in an environment where English is the primary language of instruction.

Languages Represented in Our District

Our students speak a wide range of languages, including:
English, Spanish, Urdu, Vietnamese, French, Ewe, and Malayalam.

Program Goals

The Bilingual Education Program is designed to:

  • Provide equitable access to learning materials in students’ home languages when available
  • Deliver instruction aligned to student needs in core subjects, including math, reading, science, and social studies
  • Support students who have exited the Bilingual Program with continued academic enrichment
  • Help students develop both academic and conversational English proficiency

Future Direction

The district is working toward a long-term goal of transitioning from a Transitional Bilingual Model to a Dual Language Model that supports bilingualism and biliteracy for all students.
