Curriculum Department

Bellwood School District 88 strives to create a comprehensive curriculum and instruction program that centers on the use of a balanced and blended model which integrates technology into all classrooms. Our curriculum adheres to state standards in all subjects, including the core areas of language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. We also offer instruction in art, music, physical education, and foreign languages. Here at Bellwood School District 88 we believe that no single assessment tool can capture or adequately provide a comprehensive picture of a student’s knowledge and learning; thus we use a variety of assessment measures to help guide instruction. For more information about state standards and assessments, please follow the links on this page.

Bilingual/ESL Program

As part of our core curriculum program, Bellwood also provides services to English language learners (ELL). Due to the growing population of ELLs within Bellwood School District 88, the need for bilingual/ESL classrooms is also growing. Currently, our program provides services to over 700 students (nearly 30% of the overall student population). At registration, new families complete a home language survey, and we assess the students identified as having a non-English background to determine their need for services. We may place students entering school with little English proficiency in one of our bilingual or English as a second language (ESL) self-contained classrooms. All students enrolled in the program take the ACCESS for ELLs 2.0. The ACCESS 2.0 is a secure large-scale English language proficiency assessment administered to kindergarten through 8th grade students who have been identified as English language learners (ELLs). It is given annually to monitor students' progress in acquiring academic English. ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 is aligned with the WIDA English Language Development Standards and assesses each of the four language domains of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
