Thurgood Marshall Elementary

Education at Thurgood Marshall is about collaboration. We know that every kindergarten through fifth grader who walks through our doors has a different set of needs and abilities, but we also believe in the potential of all children to become self-directed lifelong learners. As such, we strive to create an environment where we encourage our students to take risks and become creative producers. To do this, we work closely with parents, teachers, students, and community members, encouraging one another to look at challenges as opportunities in disguise and to take the time to celebrate achievement—both individually and collectively.

A Message from Our Principal

Dear Thurgood Marshall’s Families:

I am excited to welcome our new and returning families to the 2017-2018 school year. It is my sincere honor to serve as your principal for this school year, as well as be a part of such an outstanding school community. This year will be filled with many golden opportunities for all of our students. We will continue to build upon what we have accomplished and strive to find ways that we can become better.

As I reflect on the 2016-2017 school year, I cannot help but remember some of our stellar moments. We engaged students in the voting process, we named our school mascot – DJ the Dolphin, we celebrated academic achievement, and created our school-wide Positive Behavior Intervention System, where we use Dolphin Tails to recognize positive behavior. And, I cannot forget the support of our parents with the rebirthing of our Parent Teacher Association (PTA). I look forward to creating more memories this school year.

Your partnership and support are key elements to ensuring that we are able to maximize each student’s educational potential and personal development. We extend a special, yearlong invitation to our families to join us at school activities and events whenever possible. Nonetheless, we encourage a positive home-school connection based on the mutual goal of providing the best learning experience for all of our students. We cannot do this alone, therefore, we want…we need…and we value your involvement and support in your child’s education. I encourage and challenge you to become an integral part of your child’s education, volunteer your time inside and outside of the classroom, and join our progressive Parent Teacher Association.

Our School Leadership Team along with our staff are working to refine our school and has created a new vision for Thurgood Marshall Elementary School: “One Team, One Vision…preparing, empowering, and motivating children to thrive globally.” Coupled with our new vision we are going to Set Sail for Success into the 2017-2018 school year. We will focus on character education initiatives, Common Core skills, the use of data to drive instruction, and provide consistent implementation of the curriculum in a rigorous manner. Our dynamic and talented faculty and staff are equipped with a diverse set of approaches to instruction, which will address a variety of student learning styles.  This will navigate us to our ultimate goal, to build upon our successes and continue to increase all of the students’ achievements.

I truly look forward to meeting all of our new students and families, and I plan to continue collaborating with our returning students and parents.  As your leader I will ensure that Thurgood Marshall Elementary School is a place where possibilities are endless! My door is always open, feel free to stop by and see me any time.

 Sincerely,

Sarah Kilgore
